4 Ways to Engage with Your Social Media Followers

When it comes to social media a lot of people like to focus on the number of followers they have.  I say, shift your focus. Today I want you to take a closer look at how you engage with your community rather than how many people are liking and following you online.  Just because someone is following you doesn’t mean they necessarily like what you’re posting, interested in your business or can be considered a client or customer.

Instead of being all about the fluff we’re going to look at four simple ways that you can focus on four ways to engage with your social media followers that will ultimately enrich their social experience and yours as well.

1. Start with the Basics

No matter which platform you’re using, make sure your profile is complete.  It’s the biggest ‘no duh’ but it’s a step so many people miss.  Your profile is where followers go to learn more about you, and see what you have to offer.

Entrepreneurs are always asking how can they get people to follow them to their site – well how can they when you have zero links to your blog, webinar or course?  You’re missing out on some amazing opportunities.  Seriously, complete your bio.

Remember, your information should be the same across all social media.  It shows your consistent, professional and it doesn’t confuse your followers.

Even if you know your profile is complete, double check that all the information is current.  Nothing is more annoying then clicking an outdated link or viewing old information that no longer applies.

2. Reply to Your Comments

There are too many people who are not replying to comments and questions.  Excuses range from being shy to not having time.  Make time.  Replying to comments is one of the easiest ways to boost your engagement.  By taking the time to respond:

  • Show you care about your followers
  • Provide your customers with information
  • Can encourage brand loyalty

If you’ve been lacking in the responding department go through your last five posts and reply to your followers; it’s something you can do in at least 15 minutes.

3. Use Relevant Hashtags

Hashtags are another one of those things that’s super simple and elevates your social experience in days.  Now that Instagram will be switching to an algorithm, it’s more important than ever for you to start including hashtags in your posts.  Posts with hashtags reach more users so hashtags is where it’s at!

If you’re afraid of hashtags or had no clue they existed you can still start using them in your upcoming posts.

The easiest rule to follow is use terms that are relevant to your industry.  If you have a bakery you would use words like #cupcakes #cookies and #cakes.  Super obvious right?  But do some more research and you might discover #sweettreats or #sweettooth are very relevant for your industry as well.

Make it fun by joining in on popular hashtags and all purpose tags like #ThrowBackThursday and make it something your followers look forward to seeing you participate in.   Those themes also act as a cheat for content on your social schedule.

4. Include a Call to Action (CTA)

A call to action = you asking someone to do something (an action).  Don’t be afraid of this, people have been doing it to you all the time and it works.  Don’t believe me?

  • Double tap if you love ______________
  • Tag a friend who you would see this view with
  • Share this post with someone who loves to bake
  • Tell me in the comments what I should talk about next

Those are all CTAs and they’re great ways to engage with your followers.  You can put the Call to Action in the image itself or in the caption of your post.  Either way, this is so easy to do that you should pledge to include a CTA in three of your upcoming posts.

Once you start implementing these tips be sure to watch how your social media experience changes.  I’m post a lot on Instagram so I like to review my Instagram analytics with Iconosquare.

Hopefully you’re getting more comments that are related with your business, the people that are choosing to like you seem more like your target audience and you’re getting more likes from people who genuinely want to be a part of your brand experience.
