Our Brand Design Process, Step by Step

brand design process

Learn about our brand design process—from brainstorm to final system. See how we work with mission-driven teams to create meaningful, cohesive visuals.

If you’ve ever wondered how a brand identity comes to life—or what actually goes into creating a logo, colour palette, or visual system that truly reflects your mission—this one’s for you.

For many nonprofits and mission-driven teams, branding can feel like an afterthought. You’re focused on impact, programs, and people—so it’s easy to assume visual design is just “nice to have.”

But the truth is, your brand is often the first impression someone has of your work. It’s how funders, partners, media, and your community begin to understand who you are and what you stand for.

At See Girl Work, our brand design process is both collaborative and intentional. We don’t just make things look good—we make sure they mean something.

Whether you’re a nonprofit, advocacy group, or purpose-led business, we believe your visual identity should be more than just beautiful. It should be rooted in strategy, clarity, and meaning—built to grow with you, not just sit on a shelf.

Here’s how we get there, together.

Phase 1: Discovery & Direction

This is where the magic (and the mess) begins. We kick off with a discovery session, brainstorming together to get a feel for your mission, goals, audience, and what you want your brand to say—without even showing a single sketch.

Behind the scenes, we’re also mind-mapping, researching your sector, and identifying design opportunities that align with your story. From there, we develop written concept directions that guide the visuals to come. This phase involves the most client collaboration—after all, no one knows your organization like you do.

📍 Client Presentation: You’ll receive written concept summaries outlining the key themes, tone, and direction we recommend exploring visually.

Phase 2: Exploration & Iteration

Once we’re aligned on the conceptual direction, our designers begin translating those ideas into initial sketches and studies. These are hand-drawn and intentionally rough—meant to explore multiple variations of layout, structure, and visual style.

We dive deep into how typography, symbols, and lockups (the arrangement of logo elements) could work together to tell your story. This phase is where iteration thrives.

📍 Client Presentation: You’ll see early explorations and have the chance to give input on which directions feel most aligned before we move into refinement.

Phase 3: Refinement & Expansion

Here, we build on what’s working. We revisit strong concepts and enhance them with colour palettes, typography pairings, pattern development, and graphic extensions.

This phase is reflective—we narrow in, revise with intention, and look at how different elements can work across platforms and materials.

📍 Client Presentation: You’ll see polished drafts, colour variations, and supporting visual elements. Feedback at this stage is about honing the details, not reworking the foundation.

Phase 4: Systems & Storytelling

With a clear direction and refined visuals, we finalize your brand system. That includes logo variations, colour codes, type guidelines, visual extensions (like iconography or patterns), and often a concept statement that explains the heart of your brand.

We also provide clear usage rules and guidance—so your brand stays consistent whether it’s applied by your internal team, partners, or collaborators.

📍 Client Delivery: You receive a final brand package along with a custom style guide—plus templates or Canva assets if requested.

Why It Works

This phased approach keeps the process collaborative without overwhelming your team. At every step, we check in with you—because the best brand identities aren’t just designed, they’re co-created.
