The Ask

See Girl Work delivered health equity graphic design for Black Health Alliance including a culturally inclusive infographic and toolkit.

Black Health Alliance (BHA) is a national organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of Black communities in Canada. They centre Black voices in identifying barriers to care, co-designing solutions, and driving systemic change through data, partnerships, and community engagement.

Through their research and consultations, BHA identified that Black women and gender-diverse people are significantly under-screened for breast cancer and face systemic barriers to timely and appropriate care. To address this, BHA developed a health initiative called Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening for Black Communities — a campaign designed to increase early detection, promote wellness, and build trust in healthcare systems.

See Girl Work was engaged to produce a suite of publications that would form the foundation of the campaign: a style guide, an evidence brief, and a flagship infographic booklet designed to share key information and research findings with clarity and cultural sensitivity.

The Solution

Our creative approach focused on inclusivity, representation, and elegance. We began by developing a campaign style guide that outlined a distinct visual direction separate from BHA’s core brand identity. The guide featured a custom colour palette incorporating shades of pink as a visual cue to breast cancer awareness paired with soft neutrals and warm tones that broadened the narrative beyond traditional “pink ribbon” symbolism. This allowed the campaign to be inclusive of all people with breasts and chests, regardless of gender identity.

The centrepiece of the project was the infographic booklet, a 20-page educational resource that combined medical accuracy with compassionate design. Our designer created a series of custom illustrations that depicted breast and chest anatomy, self-check techniques, and early screening practices in a way that was culturally relevant, approachable, and respectful. Each illustration was crafted to represent diverse skin tones, body types, and gender expressions, helping audiences see themselves reflected in the material.

The typography was selected from accessible Google Fonts, and imagery was carefully curated from free, diverse stock sources. The final layout emphasized clarity and flow, balancing data, visuals, and narrative to create an elegant document that could live in both digital and print form.

Together, these design elements — the colour palette, typography, and illustrations — created a cohesive, modern publication suite that communicated care, representation, and trust.

The Results

The resulting materials reimagined what a breast cancer awareness campaign could look like. The publications felt human, grounded, and deeply inclusive — a reflection of the communities they were created for. The infographic booklet quickly became the cornerstone of the campaign, praised for its elegant visuals and accessible information design.

By prioritizing representation, the campaign succeeded in moving away from generic breast cancer messaging and toward something more authentic and culturally resonant. The new visual system empowered readers with knowledge while fostering openness, awareness, and trust between community members and healthcare providers.

Through this collaboration, Black Health Alliance gained a set of beautifully designed, evidence-based resources that not only educated but inspired — helping advance their mission of health equity, representation, and systems-level change for Black communities across Canada.
