In today’s competitive job market, standing out from the crowd is essential. One effective way to showcase your skills, expertise, and passion is by adding your blog to your resume.

Your blog is more than just a platform for sharing your thoughts. It can push you into a world of self-discovery. It can help you build your reputation, increase your expertise, and give you a place to visually showcase your knowledge. But your blog can also be a valuable asset that can elevate your professional profile and set you apart from other candidates.

In this blog post, we’ll explore why adding your blog to your resume is crucial, the benefits it can bring to your job search, and practical tips for seamlessly integrating your blog into your resume. Whether you’re a seasoned blogger or just starting, harnessing the power of your blog can be a game-changer in advancing your career prospects.

Let’s dive in and discover how to add your blog to your resume effectively.

YES. You can consider adding your blog to your resume if it’s related to the industry you are pursuing (vs. a personal blog about your life). For example, if you’re in the marketing industry and your blog focuses on marketing, personal branding and social media.

I feel including my blog on my resume makes me a stronger candidate because I can demonstrate my knowledge and expertise in marketing, illustrate my presentation, writing and research skills, and showcase my understanding of social media and SEO tactics.

YES. You can consider adding your blog to your resume if you feel the overall presentation, formatting and theme is professional. If you’ve been blogging for a month and you have two posts up with no logo and no followers, don’t bother.

If you’ve been blogging for five years, consistently post three times a week on industry-related topics (and not party selfies), have a decent following and have developed a brand around your blog, it might not be a bad idea to add it in.

YES. You can make your resume look attractive. These days there are so many creative ways to enhance the look and aesthetic of your resume. Especially if you’re in a creative field such as public relations, communications, marketing, digital, writing, photography, etc.

Creative Market is my go-to source for website themes, blog themes, fonts and patterns, but you can also find easy-to-use resume templates as well.

NO. Do not add your blog to your resume if it has nothing to do with the job you are going for. If you’re going for a job in banking, do not add your fashion and beauty blog to your resume.

If you’re going for a job in real estate – do not add your food blog to your resume. If you have a personal blog that purely features pictures of coffee, flowers, outfits, motivational quotes and music videos that you enjoy – do not add your blog to your resume.

If you do decide to add your blog to your resume, I’d recommend putting it in a “hobbies and interests” section near the bottom. After your summary, actual work experience, skills and right before your education – is an ideal place to add your blog.

If you do decide to add your blog to your resume, don’t forget the whole reason you’re adding it is to show your strengths and prove your skills and qualifications as they relate to the job that you’re going for. As such, you need to list a summary of what your blog is about (again it should relate to the job and industry you’re going for) as well as all the responsibilities that you manage as a blogger. Below is a snapshot taken from my resume.

Reading and writing blogs can make you part of a select community of people who trade ideas and can help you build relationships with others who share similar interests. These connections and interactions will open doors, widen your horizons, and have you discover infinite possibilities. However, when you’re still an employee trying to represent another company, you can’t always intertwine your professional life with your personal life.

In conclusion, incorporating your blog into your resume is a strategic move that can significantly enhance your professional profile and increase your chances of landing your desired job. By showcasing your writing skills, expertise, and passion through your blog, you demonstrate your commitment to continuous learning and personal branding.

But having your blog listed on your resume won’t always be the best idea for everybody in every field. If you have your own business, blogging is a no-brainer, but as a job searcher, whether or not to add your blog to your resume should be considered with care and should only be executed if it’s done at the highest level. You’ll have to decide if it makes sense for the job you’re applying to and for the industry you’re in.

Whether you’re a seasoned blogger or just starting, remember to highlight key achievements, provide relevant links, and tailor your presentation to align with the job you’re applying for. Embrace the opportunity to leverage your blogging experience as a valuable asset in your job search journey, and watch as your resume shines brighter than ever before.
